Soccer Player Excluded for Life From Any National Team After a Nazi Salute

On Saturday have played 3 matches of the 26th round soccer championship Greece – Super League. In the last match of the day, which started at 19.30, have met teams AEK Athens and Veria, with not much stake, considering that there are on places 11 and 13 in the rankings. After AEK Athens opened the score by T. Fountas in the 3rd minute of the football game and Veria has equaled in minute 75 of the match by M. Olaitan, G. Katidis score in the 84 th minute winning goal for AEK Athens (2-1 final score). After marking the goal, AEK Atena midfielder G. Katidis, former captain of the Under 19 national team of Greece, enjoyed in an unconventional way making the Nazi salute.  

After thisgesture, HelenFootballFederationmetin anextraordinary meetingwhichdecided that G.Katidis been excluded for life from all soccer national teams. In vain tried midfielder apology via social network Twitter, saying “I’m not fascist and I wanted my gesture to signify what people think. I do not know that is Nazi salute“, decision was made.

A similar case was in 2006, when Lazio‘s captain at the time, Paolo Di Canio was fined and suspended for a game because of the same gesture. Also, Lazio soccer team, Stefan Radu went last year to the Commission for Discipline after he greeted fans alike. All footballers have claimed that their expression had no political tints, but Disciplinary Committee considered that such a salute can not be interpreted as an element of joy.
