Prince Friso of Holland, brother of King Willem-Alexander, died Monday morning from injuries suffered during a skiing accident produced in Austria in 2012, informed the press service of the royal family, recalling that it was in a state of “minimal knowledge”, according to AFP.
“HRH regret to announce that His Royal Highness Prince Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David, Prince of Orange-Nassau, Jonckheer van Amsberg died this morning at age 44, in Palace Huis ten Bosch at The Hague” is said in a press release issued by the royal press service. “Prince Friso died from complications due to damage caused to the brain, caused by lack of oxygen during a ski accident on 17 February 2012 in Lech in Austria,” said the same source. Johan Friso, aged 44, an experienced skier, was caught by an avalanche on February 17 while skiing in the Austrian town of Lech, along with a friend of his, on unmarked trail, while the risk of avalanches was at that time very high (level four on a scale of five steps).
Prince Dutch got stuck in the snow for 20 minutes, before being removed from rescuers, while its brain was not oxygenated. For this reason, the prince was in cardiac arrest about 50 minutes, during which resuscitation was needed – a term considered too long by doctors. Being first in a coma, the prince finally presented “very weak knowledge” in November. Condition “has not changed since then,” said the press service of the royal house. Prince Friso was discharged from Wellington Hospital in London on July 9 and was transferred to the Royal Palace, the residence of his mother Beatrix, which should be followed to spend this summer and where a medical team dealing with him continually.
Queen Beatrix abdicated on April 30 in favor of her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, and leave the royal palace towards the end of the year and will retire in another castle whose renovation started soon. It also has a third son Constantijn. The Dutch government has not authorized the marriage of Prince Johan Friso to Mabel Wisse Smit, with whom he has two daughters, Luana and Zaria, and therefore he is no longer officially part of the Dutch royal house. He retained the title of Prince of Orange-Nassau.
